Richard (Chip) Hay visually explores the dynamics between people and the environments that they create and inhabit. Reflecting his interests and training in sociology, architecture, photography and design, Hay views built and natural environments as cultural manifestations of people and their societies.
Hay interprets the social landscape of ordinary people and their environments on four continents. Working across several decades, in both analog and digital processes, encourages his contemplation of change, permanence and impermanence. He is currently working on two photobooks and several exhibitions.
Hay has exhibited in several group shows including those at the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, the Los Angeles Center of Photography and the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel.. He has a Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University and studied photography there. He lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area.
