Kano by Design

Kano is the second largest city in Nigeria and is located in the northern Sahel-Savannah region on the edge of the Sahara desert.  Established in the 11th century, it’s an ancient, walled center of Islamic learning, governance and trans-Saharan trade and commerce.  I traveled there by road several times in the 70’s and made these images of the city and its traditional Hausa, mud-brick architecture.
